Reclaiming the internet – a quick tip

A source of frustration is the endless adverts invading the internet. A number of times I have recommended using Mozilla Firefox (www.mozilla.com) in preference to Internet Explorer or Safari.

A very useful Firefox add-on is adblockplus.org. If you visit the website using Firefox you can install this add-on which has the great advantage that it blocks many of the annoying adverts on websites – stopping a lot of the scam adverts I have mentioned in the past. Note you can install this in Windows, Mac and Linux versions.

Once installed a new red icon appears at the top right of the browser window and you will be asked to subscribe to an ad-blocking list - I suggest using the US list. Once you have done this enjoy browsing the internet without adverts all over the place.

There are some simple customisations you can make too. If you find there are some websites where you don’t mind the ads or it doesn’t look correct you can temporarily turn off AdBlock plus from the red icon (it turns grey) or tell AdBlock to leave this specific website or page alone whenever you visit.

A truly excellent addition to Firefox – enjoy.
