Windows 7 on its way – bye, bye Vista!
In October Microsoft will release Windows 7. “So what?” you might say! After the poor press that Windows Vista received, Microsoft has worked hard to get Windows 7 right. Windows 7 removes most of the annoyances anyone who has used Vista will be used to and has a completely redesigned desktop. In particular the task bar (running along the bottom of the screen) has evolved significantly in appearance and functionality.
Microsoft have had arguments with EU trade regulators consequently Windows 7 sold in the EU will not be supplied with Internet Explorer preinstalled –not a major loss for consumers because Firefox and Google Chrome are free, better and more secure than Internet Explorer but it does mean that you can’t instantly use the internet. If you upgrade from Windows Vista or XP you need to download a suitable browser before installing Windows 7. This change also means that upgrade versions of Windows 7 will not be available in the EU –you will need to back up your computer and do a clean install. Inconvenient yes – but it also stops problems from previous versions of Windows creeping into your newly installed system.
From now on new computer bought before the release should get a free upgrade – make sure to read the details with your new computer as you will probably need to register your claim.
Finally, MS are offering Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional editions at a hugely discounted pre-release price. See http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/buy/offers/pre-order.aspx for details. (As I write this Amazon are discounting the prices even further and seem to be the cheapest option. These pre-release prices are only while stocks last so place your order soon to avoid disappointment).
